Sailing Barge Will on the Tideway

The spritsail barge is the vessel the Thames was built around. Flat bottomed so she could take the ground on a falling tide, rigged so a crew of two could work her, and shaped entirely by the job of moving cargo up a river that empties twice a day. Almost all of them are gone. The ones still sailing are kept going by charter work and by people who care about them. Will is one of them, and we photographed her on 16 May 2026 with passengers on deck and the Canary Wharf towers standing behind her. That contrast is the whole reason the frame is worth making. A hull designed for the Victorian coasting trade, in front of a skyline built on the docks that trade served, on the same water. You cannot stage it and you cannot get it from the bank, because from the bank the towers and the barge never line up. It needs height and it needs the barge to be in a particular part of the reach at a particular state of tide. The light was flat that day, which is honest to report: this is not golden hour work. It is a record of a working heritage vessel where she belongs, and the tan of the brailed sails carries the frame without help from the sun.
