Dixie Queen at Greenwich

The Dixie Queen is a paddle steamer, which is not a thing the Thames offers many chances to photograph. She is operated on the river by Thames Luxury Charters. They did not commission these photographs and this is not a client credit: we shot her from the air on a July evening in 2026 because she came through Greenwich Reach with a full deck and the light was right. Greenwich is the strongest backdrop on the tideway and also the least forgiving. The Old Royal Naval College is symmetrical, the Queen's House sits precisely on its axis, and the whole composition only resolves from one narrow band of positions on the river. A few degrees off and the colonnades stop lining up. Add a moving vessel that has to arrive in the frame at the moment the light is right, and the window for the photograph is measured in seconds rather than minutes. We worked it as three shots. A wide frame that places her against the full sweep of the College and the Queen's House, so the location is unmistakable to anyone who knows London. A closer three quarter view with the paddle box and the tiers of deck rail reading clearly. And a tighter frame with the low sun across the white superstructure, which is the one that shows why an evening charter sells. The vessel was under way throughout and we stayed clear of her track and of the passenger craft working the same reach.
